Scholarships

Our mission is to shape the next wave of creative music-makers to reflect and preserve the values, passions, and skills that we hold dear. We understand there are systematic imbalances in the industry and we want to offer our community and our experience to everyone who would benefit by being a part of it.

What this means is that even if you are unable to pay for our program, we still really want you to apply. As a team, we routinely donate into our scholarship pool and we make an attempt to open scholarship seats regularly in our labs.

If you are interested in a scholarship seat in one of Beat Kitchen's music production programs, please tell us about yourself and which course you are interested in taking. Please take a moment to reflect upon our pricing,  the length of the course and then how much you are reasonably able to pay. Our long-term goal is to be able to offer one or two subsidized seats in each lab (once we have enough students enrolled that we can do so).

Tuition can be a particular barrier to students who are Black, Indigenous, racialized, gendered, disabled, Queer, trans, underrepresented, oppressed and minoritized. We want these voices in our community and we tend to direct scholarship hours to such individuals, but anyone for whom tuition is a barrier is encouraged to apply and 'pay what you can'. We also urge our existing community to consider donating time or money to help us make this dream a reality.

Our scholarship program is self-funded with time that our community has lovingly donated. It is also subsidized by our generous partners and even by some of our students!  We also ask that students who are able to do so consider donating (time or money) to redistribute wealth, skills, and our collective talents. Please reach out if you would like to learn how you can help!

Working together, we can realize a dream — shaping an impactful, imaginative, transformative artistic future based on principles of creativity, empathy, and justice — for ourselves and for those in need!

Support a Scholarship

Help support our mission to reach, teach, & feed creative souls. It costs $600 to place a resident in our program for a year. Residents are eligible to enroll in classes (these have additional fees but some are as low as $100). Residents also enjoy about 14 hours a week of face-to-face mentorship, workshops, and activities. This campaign will also fund our 'pay-what-you-can' program which allows residents to join our classes at a price point they can afford. We favor anyone who is a positive, creative candidate for our community, particularly those from disadvantaged or marginalized communities, and for whom our prices are out of reach.

Scholarship Application

Scholarships come in two types:

SPONSERED MEMBERSHIP

Awarded yearly, sponsored memberships subsidize the full cost of membership. Membership puts discounted classes, lab hours, and our popular incubators and electives within reach of those who couldn't otherwise afford them.

With a sponsored membership you are included in the head-count to determine if a class will run or not.

PAY WHAT YOU CAN

In some cases, we may find open seats in a class that is running but not full. For these, we may look to existing pay-what-you-can requests. Please acquaint yourself with our pricing and make a good faith proposal for what you can afford.

With a pay-whay-you-can request, you are not considered in the headcount to determine if a class will run.
